That's not the name of the lake, but the Dutch word is very long and I never did get a round to writing it down... but, yesterday we found a wonderful lake and recreational area near Genk, Belgium only 40 minutes from my house.

There is a large forested recreational area near Genk with camping and other activities. We'll explore it a lot as the summer goes on. Being close, it is a quick, easy outing for the girls and they loved it, so I can feel like a "cool" mom and do stuff the kids without driving hours away.

I miss the lakes in the Pacific Northwest. This lake was pretty, but man-made and lacked the natural beauty that an Oregon lake would boast. I think they just dug a big hole, covered it all with cement, then dumped sand and water over it, -but the beach was fun. The kids loved the sand. Luci kept going into the water just enough to get wet, then she'd roll in the sand getting completely covered like powdered sugar on a donut. She made sand-angels and sand castles and sand houses and big pits in the sand. That was her favorite part. Arianna and Elise enjoyed the attention of Tiara and three of her friends. They had waterwings and little innertubes and floated around in the shallow water splashing.

At the end the kids splashed around and "showered off" at the kiddie area - a large shallow pool with large toys to climb on and fountains spouting water high into the air. Then they discovered one of several playground there. On a cooler day, those would be fun too.

Unfortunately, I have no photos to post of my kids playing there and there were sooo many great "photo-op" moments, but that is one of the downsides that I'm quickly learning when one buys a new camera. To bring a nice camera to a hot sandy beach would be bad. I need to play with the kids, so can I leave it in the sun or in the sand or on a table to be snatched? It can't be hot, it can't be wet, it can't get dirty... oh... it's higher maintenence than my two year old! So, I am going to invest in some cheap disposables for just this occasion, so I can be a fun mom and not sit on the patio and babysit the camera.
