On 1 July I ran to our local nursery just outside our neighborhood to pick up three fresh basil plants since I'd be needing some for our prosciutto themed dinner that night. They had a nice supply, so I picked the three nicest ones, paid, then ran home to start cooking. That evening I used just the biggest, most perfect leaves, but most all the leaves were perfect.
Ten days later my plants are healthy and growing still sitting in the window on my kitchen counter, except, several of the once perfect leaves have been nibbled down to the thick central vein. I pull one branch over to inspect more closely and scream as a little green caterpillar touches my hand.
A science opportunity I'll take. My trifle bowl is now home to three coccoons. Three? Yep. We ended up finding four little guys on my basil. They ate for two days, pottied a lot (who thought that something so tiny could produce so much poo), then three crawled onto the backsides of leaves, then began to stitch them together with sticky thread then seal them off completely. #4 and the original creepy find was thinner and still hungry... so he ate... then disappeared in the night when careless me didn't cover the bowl.
