Yesterday I was alarmed to hear a voice sounding over a loudspeaker outside my home. It seemed like some scary moment from a movie where I should come out with my hands up. Dramatic, may be, but you never really know.

So, I ran outside to see what it was and found a small Deutches Rotes Kruzes (German Red Cross) van driving ever so slowly down the B56 with an endless line of cars creeping along behind it. The little loudspeaker stuck out from the side and the voice was booming. All I caught from the string of German utterance was the number 16.

Thankfully, my housekeeper came to the rescue with the interpretation: Spende Blut.

There's going to be a blood drive. Ok. That's pretty normal. They have them in the area fairly frequently. But, really... a loudspeaker?? Are they that hard-up for blood? And I thought the ice cream man back home was obnoxious.
