A few weeks ago, British author Paul Cookson
came to the girl's school to read poems to them. Afterwards the girls had the opportunity to buy some of his poetry book and have him autograph them. They were all very excited and quite impressed to have met a real author.
A couple weeks later we got a note from the school saying that Mr. Cookson had so enjoyed his time at the school that he was going to have a little poetry contest and there would be real prizes.
Of course, Arianna and Luci both wanted to enter. It took them a while to get ideas on paper and I told them I wouldn't help them until they wrote something.
This afternoon I sat down with them and their words, talked about how we could make some simple rules for the poems to tie them together, and voila, they wrote these poems. Their ideas, their words - just a few questions from me and a bit of brainstorming. So cool. They will enter them tomorrow. We'll see how they do.

Colours Colours
by Arianna Stahlbaum, 4A
Have you seen the colours? What does yellow look like? Can you hear pink? Have you tasted rich red? Is orange rough or soft? Have you smelled blue?
Yellow. Looks like a bright, shiny sun. Sounds like the cheerful twitter of a canary. Tastes like the sour refreshment of a lemon. Feels like the smooth arch of a banana. Smells like a sweet field of buttercups.
Pink. Looks like a curly silky satin ribbon. Sounds like the smack of lips as they kiss my hand. Tastes like a cloud of sugary candy floss. Feels like the soft damp nose of a bunny. Smells like a pink carnation in the sun.
Red. Looks like the bold stripes in the Spanish flag. Sounds like the screech of a race car. Tastes like a bowl of ripe raspberries. Feels like the delight of being in love. Smells like a rose petal brushing against my cheek.
Orange. Looks like a field of orange trees. Sounds like the hum of cars around traffic cones. Tastes like a juicy nispero picked from our tree. Feels like a life preserver tight around my tummy. Smells like marigolds in my mother’s flowerpot.
Blue. Looks like different shades of sky. Sounds like the crashing of the waves at the sea. Tastes like a slice of blueberry pie fresh from the oven. Feels like a waxy new cerulean blue crayon. Smells like the violets from my garden.

Rocks
by Luci Stahlbaum
There are lots of kinds of rocks.
I can name some for you.
There’s Descloizite
A bright red octopus swimming in the deep blue sea.
Rose Quartz is
A pale pink rose someone gave to me.
Hematite coating on Calcite
Sharp, orange triangles and stars.
Adamite
A pile of clear yellow bars.
Emeralds
A precious cylinder of green.
Black Axiite
Crunchy middle, the top smooth and clean.
Beryl.
Clear like a cold glass of Sprite.
My favorite rock is Siderite.
The colour of space.
Shiny white dots, like stars, all over the place.
Like clouds, it is bumpy.
I can imagine pictures in it.
Yes, it’s true.
I love rocks of all the kinds in the world.

Quotes to consider...
"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed."
-Albert Einstein
What the heart has once owned and had, it shall never lose."
-- Henry Ward Beecher
It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped. -- Anthony Robbins
We don't stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing. -- George Bernard Shaw
An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is an adventure wrongly considered. -- GK Chesterton
The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
For most of history, Anonymous was a woman. -- Virginia Woolf
A friend is someone who will help you move. A real friend is someone who will help you move a body. -- anon
The only reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory. -- Paul Fix
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge you’ll never walk alone … The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. ~Audry Hepburn
I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it. -- Thomas Jefferson
