This is not a photo from our European travels. It's not a palace or a Rathaus. It's not even in Europe. No, this work of architectural art is simply a library sitting prominently at one end of Red Square on Seattle's UW campus.
It's the Suzzallo, home of many weary students and the famous "reading room" just behind those stained glass windows. It is, inside, as phenomenal as it is on the outside and rumor has it, that if you look hard enough, you can find a slim volume that maps out the many "climbing routes" up the infamous library.
It began in 1923 and still sits. I am happy to have had the privilege of studying there. And after today's walk around the city and the campus, there is a good chance that at least one of my girls will have that privilege as well. Tiara's fallen in love with Seattle and the school. In three years, I may just have a good reason to visit and stroll through these stacks again.
I have run by the fountain countless times. The dreaded Chemistry building is directly to the right. I used to come here and feed the ducks with friends.
This is UW's Drumheller Fountain where, on a clear day, when Seattle is lucky enough to find one, you can see a perfectly centered snow capped Mt. Rainier in the background. Sadly, not today. But it was a nice part of our tour. We walked down to the lake, Husky Stadium, and over to the Montlake parking lot and up and around the dorms. The girls were absolutely bewildered by the shoes hanging from the trees and I was just soaking it all up wishing we could live here again, just for a couple years... "Back then" I didn't have my camera or the need to take pictures. Now I saw so much more beauty with no time to capture it.
I'd even like to taste one of those delicious sourdough grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Mmmm. Seattle may see me again sooner than it thinks.
Where it all started? This is where I met my guy. Well, actually, I met him at Danken's over a scoop of coffee oreo where I would have stopped, but it changed to a Cold Stone just before I left and today it's a tacky tattoo parlor. Sorry folks... as sentimental as I am, a set of matching ice cream cone tattoos just isn't my idea of romance.
Just looked up Danken's and found this... was happy to see it still around 'til I checked the date. Written in 1992, the year I began at UW, and possibly the peak of Danken's success. Sadly, I haven't been able to find anything about Danken's past 1997. This was GREAT ice cream. Unique, high quality, delicious, local. Amazing.

Quotes to consider...
"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed."
-Albert Einstein
What the heart has once owned and had, it shall never lose."
-- Henry Ward Beecher
It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped. -- Anthony Robbins
We don't stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing. -- George Bernard Shaw
An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is an adventure wrongly considered. -- GK Chesterton

For most of history, Anonymous was a woman. -- Virginia Woolf
A friend is someone who will help you move. A real friend is someone who will help you move a body. -- anon
The only reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory. -- Paul Fix
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge you’ll never walk alone … The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. ~Audry Hepburn
