When we first looked at this house there was this messy weed-filled dirt hole right in front of the bbq area of our back yard.  The landlord asked me if I would like them to tear out the weeds and put in flagstone.  Yes!  Great idea!  I was thrilled with the idea of cleaning up that space and  making it usable.  May be even putting in a table?  I imagined the flagstone set into cement like the flagstone used in our driveway and pathways.  We moved in a couple weeks later.  I had imagined wrong.  Manuel proudly showed me the new flagstone set into dirt with big spaces between them, then began to explain how when the grass starts to grow, to bend down carefully and cut it to an inch height with scissors.  Huh.  Yeah, so I'm expected to trim the grass with scissors?  Seriously?

Well, the grass never grew and spring is coming.  I'd like to use my bbq area.  I'm ready to move a table down.  Right now it's all brown and doesn't look great.  Brilliant plan?  Yes.  We'd start doing to the beach.  Today, I hauled three girls and 4 buckets to our beach for rock hunting and sand collecting. We then came home, carved out some dirt from around the flagstone, and began to lay in rocks, shells, and sand.  It looked amazing!

By morning, the rain, possibly with the help of the dog, had messed it up.  But it was really beautiful for a few hours.  My next project?  A little cement mixing.

Our reward for yard work done was our weekly bakery sample.  A fruity repeat of last week all raves except that 2 of my girls don't like kiwi, a chocolate cup filled with chocolate mousse that is absolutely wonderful inspiring generosity in my young ones.  "Oh, if you can't finish that, I'd happily help you."  No one needed help with the chocolate.  And, we tried buñuelos - deep fried globs of dough covered in sugar.  The plain ones were just that and tasted more like oil than anything.  I got to others with a whole fig inside.  Good if you like figs.  We don't.  Blech.

Buñuelos are a traditional food for fallas, the celebration kicking off this month.  An article just came out today that they won't be making buñuelos in the small squares this year like usual because of complains of the smell from the cooking oil and the police' goal of keeping the areas a bit more open.  Last thing we need in a crowd is hot flammable oil.  So, they'll bring pre-made buñuelos into a couple of the large squares for those that equate this oil-flavored doughnut with fallas.  I'll pass and stick with the chocolate mousse.
