If you are four and have listened to the stories of E.B. White, then all spiders are named Charlotte. This is just how it is. Elise illustrated this fact once again (as all of my girls have talked sweetly to spiders) today while sitting on the toilet. There, she noticed the tiniest of baby spiders dropping down onto the toilet paper roll. And, instead of reacting with disgust or fear, she said, in her softest sweetest voice, "hello, Charlotte." And then a whole conversation started with Elise talking most sincerely to this spider as if she expected an answer, and then quite disappointed when, without even a good-day, the spider disappeared. And I'm hearing all this from the kitchen while she sat on the toilet. "Charlotte, Charlotte, where are you? Where did you go, Charlotte?"

Later in the evening...

Elise is telling me about her German school yesterday and how a spider crawled up the arm of her jacket and I ask her if that spider was Charlotte too.

"No, that Spider's Angry. She's the mommy spider and she's angry that her baby didn't come home for dinner."
